As indicated in my blog post about hosting tea parties, I am a huge tea buff. Specifically, this time, in chai tea lattes. If I’m headed to visit my sister at work, I’ll stop off and grab us a duo of chai tea lattes (iced in the summer, hot in the winter, we’re not animals here, people). If I’m walking with my momma-buddy to our breastfeeding support group, we’ll snag a chai tea latte at the shop conveniently located along our walk.
Coffee is my morning drink (and one of my favorite food ingredients), and I’m not human until I get my dose. But for some reason if I have coffee in the middle of the day for a pick-me-up, it makes me ill. So tea to the rescue!
And this recipe is the perfect marriage of the two and the wonderful boost of energy a new momma needs.
Cool spicy chai tea, a dash of honey and a splash of creamy almond milk is what we know and love. But what’s this? The ice cubes are made of dark roast coffee? Yes! This way when the ice melts in this killer Missouri humidity, instead of watering down the beverage, it gets a whole new layer of flavor and more caffeine.
Simply a must-try and very easy to throw together. I’ll steep a big bath of the tea and save it in my fridge, stock the ice cubes in the freezer and mix one up on the way out the door. And it’s an easy one to customize: use hazelnut-flavored coffee for the cubes or add a splash of almond extract to the tea, perhaps switch the honey for maple syrup or the almond milk for luscious indulgent cream.
Makes 1 Drink
1-2c brewed coffee, according to the size of your ice cube tray
1c brewed chai tea, cold
1/4c almond milk
1-2tbsp honey, according to your preference
Divide the coffee into an ice cube tray the day before and let freeze overnight. Pour the rest of the ingredients into a glass and stir well. Top off with desired amount of ice and enjoy!
